The Post & Beam stands triumphant after150 years in a changing world. Owned by an authoress who lived and wrote books here, The Post & Beam is protected in a Family Trust. Only four owners are on record since the Civil War.
Much of the old house is original: The exterior porch posts and Victorian trim, the hand carved front door, most of the metal roof, fireplace chimneys, fireplace mantels, handmade bricks and mud mortar, tongue and groove ceilings, wainscoting, yellow poplar floors, and more. When you step inside the farmhouse, you are wrapped in rural history.
The farmhouse was restored in 1983 by Robert George, Columbia, TN, at which time the Post & Beam wing was added. Thebeams are red oak from New Hampshire & hand-pegged. The museum murals were a gift from William Morrow Publishers, NY and show Tennessee farm life in the 1800’s. The spiral staircase is a work of art built by John Frano from New England as his last masterpiece after working for the Rockefellers. The stained glass window was crafted by Sydney McClain, Columbia, TN, and designed from an 1848 quilt pattern from Massachusetts.
